The inspiration for the Cellular Table came from the geometrical properties of liquid materials and their behaviors under certain physical conditions. Ozkaya aimed to create a spatial environment by utilizing three different layers of cellular structure, each with a different thickness, to provide both strength and lightweight properties.
The top part of the table is made of glass, while the bottom structural layers are made from three ABS plastic layers that were 3D printed and hand-finished. This combination of materials not only enhances the visual appeal of the table but also ensures its structural stability.
One of the key features of the Cellular Table is its unique shadow qualities. The varying thicknesses of the cellular layers create different shadow patterns at different times of the day, adding an element of dynamism to the table's design.
The realization of the Cellular Table involved the use of advanced manufacturing techniques. The ABS plastic layers were 3D printed, and an electro-forming process was used to cover both the inside and outside layers with a metallic coating in black and copper colors.
With dimensions of 300mm in width, 300mm in depth, and 250mm in height, the Cellular Table is a compact yet visually impactful piece of furniture. Its lightweight nature and unique design make it a versatile addition to any interior space.
The development of the Cellular Table was not without its challenges. The fabrication phase required collaboration with digital fabrication facilities in London and Switzerland to experiment with both the fabrication and electroforming processes. The CAD models were refined with the help of an engineer to ensure structural stability while minimizing material usage.
The Cellular Table was completed in January 2015 in London after months of research and development. It has since garnered recognition and acclaim, winning the Silver A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes the table's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.
The Cellular Table is a testament to the possibilities of contemporary design and manufacturing methods. It pushes the boundaries of what is possible in furniture design, offering both users and fabricators the opportunity to create resourceful and visually captivating products.
